Understanding Canadian Social Insurance Numbers

What is a SIN?

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number issued by Service Canada. It's used to access government programs and is required for employment and tax purposes in Canada.

SIN Number Format

  • 9 digits total - Usually formatted as XXX-XXX-XXX
  • First digit meaning:
    • 1-7: Regular SIN (Canadian citizens and permanent residents)
    • 9: Temporary SIN (temporary residents, work permit holders)
  • Validation: Uses the Luhn algorithm (same as credit cards)
  • Check digit: The last digit is calculated to make the entire number valid

How the Luhn Algorithm Works

The Luhn algorithm validates SINs through these steps:

  1. Starting from the right, double every second digit
  2. If doubling results in a two-digit number, add those digits together
  3. Sum all the digits
  4. If the total is divisible by 10, the SIN is valid

Example: SIN 046-454-286

  • Digits: 0-4-6-4-5-4-2-8-6
  • Double every 2nd: 0-(8)-6-(8)-5-(8)-2-(16)-6
  • Sum digits: 0+8+6+8+5+8+2+1+6+6 = 50
  • 50 ÷ 10 = 5 (valid!)

Temporary SINs (Starting with 9)

  • Issued to temporary residents (work permit, study permit holders)
  • Has an expiry date linked to the work/study permit
  • Must be renewed when permit is extended
  • Starts with the digit 9
  • Employers must verify the expiry date

Protecting Your SIN

  • Never carry your SIN card in your wallet
  • Only provide your SIN when legally required (employment, taxes, banking)
  • Beware of SIN-related scams - Service Canada never calls to ask for your SIN
  • Report lost or stolen SINs to Service Canada immediately
  • Check your credit report regularly for unauthorized use
