About barcode formats

Choosing the right barcode format depends on your use case. Each format has different character support and length requirements.

CODE128: general purpose, inventory, shipping labels. Variable length, full ASCII.
CODE39: non-retail, automotive, defense. Numbers, uppercase letters, and a handful of symbols.
EAN-13: retail products worldwide. Fixed 13 digits.
EAN-8: small retail products. Fixed 8 digits.
UPC-A: retail in US and Canada. Fixed 12 digits.
ITF-14: shipping cartons and cases. Fixed 14 digits.

Tips

Validate input length before printing — short or extra characters break scanners.
Test printed barcodes with multiple scanner apps before mass production.
Print at 300 DPI or higher; keep at least 2.5 mm of quiet zone on each side.
Maintain high contrast between bars and background.
