Understanding Canadian Sales Tax
Canada has a multi-layered sales tax system that varies by province and territory. There are three types of sales taxes in Canada:
GST (Goods and Services Tax)
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a federal tax of 5% that applies across all of Canada. In provinces that don't have HST, GST is charged separately from provincial sales tax.
PST (Provincial Sales Tax)
Some provinces charge their own Provincial Sales Tax (PST) in addition to GST. PST rates vary by province:
- British Columbia: 7% PST
- Saskatchewan: 6% PST
- Manitoba: 7% RST (Retail Sales Tax)
- Quebec: 9.975% QST (Quebec Sales Tax)
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax)
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) combines federal and provincial sales taxes into a single tax. HST provinces include:
- Ontario: 13% HST
- Nova Scotia: 15% HST
- New Brunswick: 15% HST
- Prince Edward Island: 15% HST
- Newfoundland and Labrador: 15% HST
Provinces with GST Only
Alberta and the three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) only charge the 5% federal GST with no additional provincial sales tax.
Tax Exemptions
Not all goods and services are subject to sales tax. Common exemptions include basic groceries, prescription drugs, medical devices, and certain educational services. Rules vary by province.
